Credit cards can give great savings—but only if you use them strategically.
π The goal is simple: earn maximum value from the money you already spend
π1. Use the Right Card for the Right Expense
Different cards give different benefits.
π Example:
- Online shopping - Cashback card (SBI, Axis, HDFC, and so on)
- Travel bookings - Travel/rewards card (AXIS, HDFC, Scapia Travel, and so on)
- Fuel - Fuel-specific card, such as IndianOil, BPCL, HPCL, etc., with different banks
- Food & Dining - HSBC live+card, HDFC swiggy card, and so on
In my opinion:
Using one card for everything = missing out on extra savings
π2. Focus on High Cashback Categories
Most cards offer:
- 5% cashback on selected categories
- 1% on others
π Always prioritize spending where cashback is highest.
π Example
- βΉ10,000 online spend
- 5% cashback → βΉ500
π Same spend on wrong card (1%) → βΉ100
π You lose βΉ400 just by choosing the wrong card
π3. Combine Offers Purchases with Sales + Cashback
π Best strategy:(when offers running)
- Use the bank offer (10% instant discount)
- Also earn cashback/reward points
π Example:
Using an Axis Bank card during a sale:
- βΉ20,000 purchase
- βΉ2,000 instant discount
- βΉ1,000 cashback
π Total benefit = βΉ3,000
π 4. Track Reward Value (Very Important)
Reward points are not always equal.
π Example:
|
Points |
Value |
|
1 point |
βΉ0.25 |
|
1 point |
βΉ1 |
Most people don’t know this:
More points ≠ more value
π Always check rupee conversion
π 5. Use Multiple Cards Smartly
π Example setup:
- SBI/ ICICI Bank → Online shopping
- Axis Airtel card → Utility bills
- Axis/ Scapia→ Travel & offers
π This increases overall returns significantly
π 6. The Voucher “Double-Dip”
Boost your rewards by using gift vouchers instead of paying directly.
Example: If you’re ordering from Domino's Pizza, instead of getting just 1% - 5% cashback on a usual credit card payment, buy a Domino’s voucher from platforms like Amazon or other gifting sites. You can get up to 12% discount on the voucher + 5% cashback from your credit card.
You can do this for brands like Myntra, Croma, JioMart, and BigBasket, etc
Result: Earn 7%–20% total rewards on spends that usually give only ~1% - 5%.
π 7. Redeem Rewards Smartly
Don’t let points sit idle.
π Use for:
- Statement credit
- Vouchers
- Flights/hotels
For example, transferring points to hotel loyalty programs (like Marriott Bonvoy or Accor Live Limitless) often yields 3x more value than taking the points as simple cashback.
π‘ Practical Tips
β Do This:
- Track monthly spending categories
- Check offers before paying
- Keep 2–3 different cards
β Avoid This:
- Ignoring reward expiry
- Using the wrong card
- Overspending for rewards
π’ Insights
π In my opinion:
The smartest users don’t spend more—they just earn more on the same spending.
π Here’s a simple hack:
Before every big purchase, ask:
“Which card gives me the highest return here?”
π Most people don’t know this:
Even small 1–2% extra rewards can add up to βΉ5,000–βΉ10,000 yearly savings
βSimple rule:
Spend smart, not more—and let your card work for you.
